Etsy recommends listing photos of 2000 x 2000 px or more, with a 635 px first-photo minimum. File types, ratio, size limits, rules. Verified 20 Oct 2026.
Short answer: Etsy recommends listing photos at least 2000 pixels wide and 2000 pixels tall. Your first photo should be at least 635 x 635 pixels, or the listing may show up lower in Etsy search. Use .jpg, .png, .gif, .svg or .heic, keep files small, make the first photo landscape or square, and use your own photos of the item.

Etsy words the 2000 pixel figure as a recommendation. If you upload a smaller image you may see the message "Listings look best with photos at least 2000 pixels wide". Etsy says that message is only a suggestion and you should still be able to publish. The 635 pixel figure is the one Etsy ties to search placement, and it applies to the first photo.
You may also see "72 PPI" or "4:3" quoted as Etsy rules. Etsy's help pages state sizes in pixels and do not set a PPI or a fixed ratio. Many sellers in community threads use a 4:3 landscape frame because it crops well, which is a sensible choice, not a requirement.
Etsy crops and compresses your photos for search results, shop pages, the listing page and mobile. Its help center says your final image will most likely be cropped down from the original, and that photos may look less sharp after upload because of compression. A large original gives you room to crop without dropping below Etsy's recommended size.
Enlarging a small file does not fix it. Etsy notes that increasing the size of an image may lose resolution and cause pixelation, while decreasing it does not lower resolution. Shoot or export big, keep the master file, and let Etsy do the shrinking.
Etsy's thumbnail tips also say "Avoid square crops. Upload horizontal or landscape images." Since square is still allowed for the first photo, treat landscape as Etsy's preferred shape and square as fine if it suits your product.

Size is not the only rule. Etsy's Listing Image Requirements policy says sellers must use original photos of the actual product buyers will receive, either taken by you or by someone you hired, not renderings or stock photos. There are limited exceptions: for personalized items the first image must show a finished customized item, and computer-generated mockups may appear in additional images; for some designs printed by a production partner, a mockup is allowed.
In practice: make your first photo a real photo of the real item. Edits such as cropping, resizing, colour correction and cleaning up the background are part of normal photo work. Check Etsy's policy before using generated scenes in a listing, and use them freely in ads, social posts and your own website.
File types. Etsy supports .jpg, .gif, .png, .svg and .heic only. Animated GIFs and transparent PNGs are not supported, and transparent areas appear black. Flatten cut-outs onto a solid background before uploading.

File size. Etsy's image help page says images over 1 MB may not finish uploading, especially on slower connections. Its create-listing help is stricter and says files bigger than 300k may time out. Compress large files before uploading.
Colour and rotation. Etsy converts images to sRGB, so convert before uploading if colours look wrong. Etsy auto-rotates photos using camera data; if one still uploads sideways, rotate it in an editor.
| Problem | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| "Listings look best with photos at least 2000 pixels wide" | Image under 2000 px wide | Re-export from the original at 2000 px or more |
| Upload never finishes | Large file on a slow connection | Compress the file and retry |
| Black background on a cut-out | Transparent PNG | Flatten onto white or a solid colour |
| Product cut off in search | Tight framing or a portrait first photo | Shoot wider, use landscape, adjust the thumbnail |
| Colours look dull or shifted | CMYK or a wide-gamut profile | Convert to sRGB |
| Photo uploads sideways | Camera orientation data | Rotate in an editor and re-save |
Etsy's Seller Handbook suggests using your photo slots for multiple angles, close-ups of detail and texture, and lifestyle images that show the item in use, natural light rather than flash, a simple neutral background, and no text overlays or collages in the first thumbnail. A practical gallery:

The right size prevents technical problems. It does not tell you which shots your gallery lacks. Run a listing through the Listing Image Score to see where a gallery is thin. Scoring is optional; you can go straight to creating images.
To create them, the AI product photography tool turns your own product photo into clean packshots and channel-ready crops, and generates lifestyle scenes and video for ads, social and your own store. Etsy recommends listing photos at least 2000 pixels wide and 2000 pixels tall. Your first listing photo should be at least 635 x 635 pixels so the listing is less likely to show up lower in Etsy search.
No. It is Etsy's recommended size, not a hard upload block. Etsy may show a suggestion that listings look best with photos at least 2000 pixels wide, but you can still publish. The minimum Etsy ties to search placement is 635 pixels for the first photo.
Etsy does not set a fixed ratio. It says the first photo should be horizontal (landscape) or square, and its thumbnail tips favour landscape. Many sellers use 4:3 landscape. Leave a border so square, portrait and landscape crops all work.
Etsy supports .jpg, .gif, .png, .svg and .heic. Animated GIFs and transparent PNGs are not supported. Etsy says images over 1 MB may not finish uploading and files over 300k may time out, so compress large files.
Etsy lets you add up to 20 photos and 2 videos to each listing. The videos can be 5 to 15 seconds long.
Etsy's policy requires original photos of the actual item, not renderings or stock photos, with limited exceptions for personalized items and some production-partner designs. Use a real photo of the item as the first image and check Etsy's policy before using generated scenes.
